Hurry! GROCS winners on display through Wednesday

Have any doubt that SI students are talented and collaborative by nature? Look no further than the annual Grant Opportunities (Collaborative Spaces) contest, or GROCS, for further proof. Of the six projects selected as winners in this year’s contest, two have SI student participation.

The SI-related projects are:

  • Digitizing Knowledge — Exploring Archival Collections in Virtual Spaces — Doctoral student Ricardo Punzalan worked with students Urmila Venkatesh of the School of Art & Design, Kiara Vigil of the Department of American Culture, and Colleen Woods of the Department of History on this project, which aims to answer questions about the proliferation of digital archive collections and the potential impact that has on both research and teaching.
  • Group Loops — Jonathan Cohen, Jacek Spiewla, and Adam Torres of SI worked with David Fienup of the School of Music to explore how the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch can be usedd to teach music theory while participants collaborate on a group music track.

All of the winning projects are now on display in the Duderstadt Center Gallery on North Campus through Wednesday, April 15. The gallery is open from noon-6 p.m.

GROCS is a program of the Digital Media Commons at U-M. Each year, the program funds student projects that explore new facets of teaching, learning and collaboration, by employing technologies newly at hand.
