Congrats go to doctoral student Ricardo L. Punzalan for receiving the 2009 Oliver Wendell Holmes Travel Award from the Society of American Archivists. The award was presented Aug. 14 in Austin, Texas at ARCHIVES 2009, the joint annual meeting of SAA and the Council of State Archivists.

The award enables overseas archivists who are already in the United States or Canada for training to build upon their experience by traveling to SAA’s annual meeting. In addition to being a student at SI, Punzalan is a professor in archival studies at the University of the Phillipines in Manila.

Punzalan earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in library science at the University of the Philippines, where he taught archival studies before taking a leave of absence to undertake his doctoral work. His research interests include collective memory and how minority and marginalized communities are documented by archives.

“In addition to giving colleagues from around the world the opportunity to learn about the work of SAA and meet a wide array of archivists from North America, the members of SAA also benefit from the insights and experience that our international colleagues can bring to us,” members of the selection committee said.

CDO Event: UX from the management’s viewpoint

September 8, 2009

Join the Michigan chapters of the Usability Professionals Association and CHI (currently in formation), in conjunction with the School of Information Career Development Office and the student CHI Chapter, for a special evening of networking and a panel session from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22 in the Ehrlicher Room, 411 West Hall. Four industry UX managers and executives will give short position presentations on the individuals and skills that make a successful team.

You’ll learn what user experience industry leaders are saying about what it takes to succeed in the field, identify the skills that are critical to finding a job in this field, and hear what today’s employers are looking for in UX candidates, and more.

Even if you are just starting at SI (or you will be graduating this year) this is a good networking and career exploration opportunity to start to think about an internship for next summer or long-term career goals. Make sure you are developing the skills and competencies that will make you marketable in this field when you graduate.

There will be time for Q&A after the panel session, so come prepared with thoughtful questions.

Refreshments will be provided. Sign-up on iTrack is REQUIRED by midnight Wednesday, Sept 16.
