CDO Event: UX from the management’s viewpoint

September 8, 2009

Join the Michigan chapters of the Usability Professionals Association and CHI (currently in formation), in conjunction with the School of Information Career Development Office and the student CHI Chapter, for a special evening of networking and a panel session from 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22 in the Ehrlicher Room, 411 West Hall. Four industry UX managers and executives will give short position presentations on the individuals and skills that make a successful team.

You’ll learn what user experience industry leaders are saying about what it takes to succeed in the field, identify the skills that are critical to finding a job in this field, and hear what today’s employers are looking for in UX candidates, and more.

Even if you are just starting at SI (or you will be graduating this year) this is a good networking and career exploration opportunity to start to think about an internship for next summer or long-term career goals. Make sure you are developing the skills and competencies that will make you marketable in this field when you graduate.

There will be time for Q&A after the panel session, so come prepared with thoughtful questions.

Refreshments will be provided. Sign-up on iTrack is REQUIRED by midnight Wednesday, Sept 16.

Critics needed to preview CHI posters

March 6, 2009

Assistant Professor Mick McQuaid is looking for a few good critics. This year, SI has won an unprecedented five positions among the 12 semifinalist teams in the CHI Student Design Competition, to be held in Boston from April 4-9.

CHI is the world’s most prominent human-computer interaction conference. SI teams have dominated the student design competition for the past three years, winning third place in 2006, first place in 2007, and second place in 2008.

To help SI dominate CHI again, students, staff, and faculty can preview the posters that this year’s student teams will display in Boston during the next CommuniTea from 4-5 p.m. Wednesday, March 11. The CommuniTea is in the SI North Convergence Room. A total of 21 students will participate in this poster session. In addition to learning about the projects, you can offer your opinion about any aspect of the presentation that would be helpful for the students.

“The CHI teams this year will be sponsored by Axure Software Solutions, maker of a leading wireframing, prototyping, and specification tool,” Mick notes. MSI student Debra Lauterbach initiated contact with Axure, leading to the company’s sponsorship and the appreciation of her colleagues at SI.”

The weekly CommuniTea brings together the SI community for an informal social hour. Special thanks go to the CommuniTea organizers: doctoral students at SI and Dean Martha E. Pollack.

Axure lends support to CHI design teams

February 26, 2009

SI student teams traveling to Boston have received a helping hand from Axure, headquartered in San Diego, California, provides solutions to help the design and development community. The company donated $3,120 to the School of Information. Assistant Professor Mick McQuaid noted that MSI student Debra Lauterbach initiated contact with Axure, “leading to the sponsorship and the appreciation of her colleagues at SI!” Jill Andrews, director of development and external relations, said the gift provides much-needed funds to enable the students to participate in the CHI contest.
