There are some exciting events coming up in early October for students interested in community engagement or public impact work through information services and technologies.
SI 575, the Community Information Corps fall seminar, will feature its first speaker of the term this Friday, Oct. 2 in 311 West Hall from 11:30 a.m.-1 p.m. Keith Hampton (mysocialnetwork.net) will be speaking about how technological changes associated with the rise of a network society have influenced how we maintain social networks, access information, and use private, parochial, and public spaces. This event is free and open to the public.
The Community Information Corps will also be hosting a general information meeting to discuss group procedures and upcoming projects for the term. This meeting will be in 405A-B on Oct. 7 from noon-1 p.m. There are a lot of interesting and varied project opportunities, ranging from volunteer opportunities with Recycle Ann Arbor and their green building education department to working with a new technology and arts collective, i3 Detroit. We will also be brainstorming a fun guerrilla marketing campaign for CIC! If you have project ideas or interests, please feel free to come to this meeting and we will try to help you realize your project interests.
Finally, CIC will be hosting a general potluck open to all SI students, faculty, and staff and A2 community members on Friday, Oct. 9 at 7 p.m. This event will be off campus, so please E-mail Emily Puckett at epuckett@umich.edu for directions. Help us celebrate the beginning of fall with good company and good food!
