See you at our ALA reception in Chicago

June 2, 2009

The Chicago area is home to 350 School of Information alumni — and we want to meet with as many as possible at our reception being held in conjunction with the American Library Association annual conference. You’re invited to mix and mingle with fellow alumni (and some faculty and current students). You’ll also get an update on what’s happening here in Ann Arbor.

The reception will be from 3:30–5:30 p.m. Sunday, July 12 at the Hyatt Regency Chicago, 151 E. Wacker Dr. An RSVP is not required, but it helps us plan accordingly. If your plans change at the last minute and you haven’t RSVP’d, don’t worry, you should still feel free to come. You do not need to be registered for the conference to come to the reception, and alumni from all SI specializations are invited!

If you want to join in the fun, send a note to Jill Andrews, director of development and external relations, at si.chicago@umich.edu or call (734) 647-7311.

SI alumni reception in Boston a crowd-pleaser

April 9, 2009

Jill Andrews, director of development and external relations at the School of Information, reports from Boston where a reception was held Wednesday, April 8 for alumni and members of the SI contingent attending the ACM CHI Conference:

Tom Finholt, SI professor and associate dean for research and innovation, delivered a brief talk with lots of great photos and images (our favorite kind of presentation!) about the School to a standing-room-only crowd last evening. We lost count around 60 people. The room was packed with animated, exuberant alumni and friends who wasted no time catching up with each other. About 130 SI alumni live in the Boston area, and many of them joined the SI students and faculty CHI participants here in Boston for refreshments following a long day of meetings.

SI alumna Janet Stewart (AMLS ’72), who works at University of Massachusetts Boston Library, briefly described massBLAST, an opportunity for area alumni to engage and mentor high school students for internships. People from as far away as New Zealand, Denmark, Germany and Singapore joined us. Many more were from universities and corporations in Michigan, California, Georgia, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Texas.

Ann Arbor area alumni: Celebrate spring ’09 SI graduates

February 17, 2009

The Office of Alumni Relations and the SI Alumni Society Board will host a GRADUATE SEND-OFF event for this spring’s graduates. If you are an alumna/us of SI and live in the Ann Arbor area, please join graduating students from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday, March 12 at the Cottage Inn on William Street. This will be the chance to welcome our soon-to-be graduates into the SI alumni community and get together with fellow area alumni, as well. A good time should be had by all especially if you help out by encouraging fellow alumni to attend and to let me know they’ll be there. We’d like to have enough food! Please contact me (kjordan@umich.edu) if you have any questions!
