SAA publishes SI student’s podcast case study

August 26, 2010

Alexis Antracoli: Podcasts in the Archives

Second-year MSI student Alexis Antracoli (ARM) recently had her case study on archiving podcasts at the University of Michigan accepted for publication on the Society of American Archivists (SAA) website.

Podcasts in the Archives: Archiving Podcasting Content at the University of Michigan is one of the Campus Case Studies published on the SAA portal. Campus Case Studies are reports by university archivists on working solutions for born-digital records.

The initial Campus Case Studies resulted from a workshop of university archivists on “The Development of Case Studies for the Effective Management of University Digital Records” held at the Bentley Historical Library at the University of Michigan in September 2007. The Campus Case Studies portal was launched with the support of the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation.

Antracoli’s poster on her study was one of the 10 presented by SI students and graduates at the 2010 SAA conference in Washington, D.C., in August. See related blog post.

Punzalan wins SAA travel award

September 8, 2009

Congrats go to doctoral student Ricardo L. Punzalan for receiving the 2009 Oliver Wendell Holmes Travel Award from the Society of American Archivists. The award was presented Aug. 14 in Austin, Texas at ARCHIVES 2009, the joint annual meeting of SAA and the Council of State Archivists.

The award enables overseas archivists who are already in the United States or Canada for training to build upon their experience by traveling to SAA’s annual meeting. In addition to being a student at SI, Punzalan is a professor in archival studies at the University of the Phillipines in Manila.

Punzalan earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in library science at the University of the Philippines, where he taught archival studies before taking a leave of absence to undertake his doctoral work. His research interests include collective memory and how minority and marginalized communities are documented by archives.

“In addition to giving colleagues from around the world the opportunity to learn about the work of SAA and meet a wide array of archivists from North America, the members of SAA also benefit from the insights and experience that our international colleagues can bring to us,” members of the selection committee said.

Documents reconnect speaker to Holocaust-era past

February 11, 2009

The student chapter of the Society of American Archivists is hosting what promises to be a fascinating presentation on how archival documents can reconnect one to a family’s past. MSI student David Jackson says that the SAA will host Edie Rosenfeld for a discussion of the way in which documents have helped her to reconnect with her past as a child survivor of the Holocaust. “The powerful body of documents she has brought together tell the two stories of both the means by which the Holocaust was enabled and of how Edie’s and many other families responded,” David says. The presentation will tell the many roles of records in our lives, from implementers of policy, to evidence of historical processes, and finally to the development of personal and collective memory. Edie is from the Ann Arbor area and a U-M graduate. She came to America in 1941 at the age of 9, and recently began tracing her history through documents she brought with her and records that she’s obtained via the International Tracing Service. The event will be at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, February 19 in the Ehrlicher Room, 411 West Hall. Lecturer David Wallace of the School of Information will moderate. All are welcome to attend.
