SLM students, grads get published

February 26, 2010

Current students and recent graduates of the School Library Media program are publishing articles at an impressive rate, according to SI Adjunct Lecturer Kristin Fontichiaro.

Elizabeth Griffin’s article on using literature to facilitate environmental education appeared in the October issue of School Library Monthly. Raya Samet (MSI ’09) has published two articles in SLM: “Social Studies: Making the Country Report Think” (November 2009) and “Get Graphic Novels into Your Elementary Collection” (January 2010). Amanda Nichols’s (MSI ’09) article on using VoiceThread to teach world history appears in the February issue of SLM.

Brian Hewlett (MSI ’09) and Lisa Bankey’s final project for SI 624 featured library resources to help families cope with economic crises. Their resulting article, “Don’t Foreclose on Our Future,” appeared in the fall 2009 issue of Media Spectrum, the journal of the Michigan Association for Media in Education. Raya Samet’s article, “Ten Great Web Tools You May Not Have Known About” ran in the same issue.

“It’s exciting to see our School Library Media students getting published,” Fontichiaro said. “These articles show that our SI students have something of real value to share with the library community. They have so much potential, even at this early stage in their careers — and it’s a great reflection on the quality of the SLM program.”

Tech meets the school librarian

February 18, 2009

This isn’t news to people at SI necessarily, but it’s worth noting that the message that SI has pushed for years is gaining traction in the media. That is, that today’s librarians are a true blend of talents, from “traditional” libarianship to human-computer interaction, and a whole lot more in a multitude of settings. The New York Times is the latest to take note of the trend, publishing “In Web Age, Library Job Gets Update” about school librarianship.
