SOCHI to host Design Jam sponsored by Intel, Steelcase

April 16, 2010

Join SOCHI, Intel, and Steelcase on Tuesday, April 20 for a semester finale design jam! The event will be held downtown, at the Workantile Exchange from 7-9 p.m. Designers from our sponsors, Intel and Steelcase, will be on hand to critique and judge student designs that best address our challenge:

The Challenge (a sneak peek)

Currently, people maybe deal with ~3 “smart” devices throughout their day (laptop, smartphone, netbook) – but what happens when this number becomes many many more? How will this explosion of growth impact users and their relationship with the technology?

We will be giving away some great prizes (anyone need a new netbook?) and will have ample food and refreshments.

Details:
Tuesday, April 20, 7-9 p.m.
Workantile Exchange
118 S Main, Ann Arbor

Please RSVP on Facebook so that we can plan accordingly. See you there!

SOCHI Show-and-Tell: danah boyd

October 9, 2009

Join SOCHI this Thursday for our weekly Show-and-Tell. This week we will be sharing sketchnotes from danah boyd’s presentation.

What is Show-and-Tell? Show-and-Tell is an informal gathering of HCI students. This fall, we will be opening up the Design Lab every Thursday evening for SOCHIers to gather together, share ideas, and give peer feedback. Think of it as a study hall where you are allowed (and encouraged) to talk!

When: Thursday, Oct. 15, 7-9 p.m.
Where: Design Lab 1, Duderstadt Center

SOCHI Ignite!

October 9, 2009

If you had five minutes “on stage” in front of your fellow HCI students, what would you say? What if you only got 20 slides and they rotated automatically after 15 seconds? Around the world, Ignite events have been held for people to show their answers. And this Tuesday, SOCHI will be holding our own Ignite-style event!

Twelve HCI students will be rising to the challenge and answering questions like:

What’s it like to be a part of a start up? What are leaders in the user experience and interaction design industry buzzing about these days? How can you customize your experience at SI and leverage opportunities to create an amazing internship?

Apple cider, donuts, and other refreshments will be provided. Come and find out what HCI students have been up to, ask questions and network with your peers!

When: Tuesday, Oct. 13, from 7-9 p.m.
Where: Ehrlicher Room, 411 West Hall
Please RSVP on Facebook

Get help with your portfolio

February 24, 2009

Students finding themselves in need of advice for their portfolios can get it from their peers, thanks to the SOCHI student group and its Portfolio Peer Review and Help Session. Debra Lauterbach, one of the SOCHI officers, says that part of the focus of this session will be learning from other students how they built their sites and the tools they used, Part will be devoted to giving feedback to peers. If you worked on your portfolio over break, this session is your opportunity to get feedback right away so you can make your portfolio even better. The session will run from noon-1 p.m. Tuesday, March 3 in 405 West Hall.

Design jam for TechSmith

February 24, 2009

The SOCHI student group at the School of Information invites all students to a design jam sponsored by TechSmith, a Michigan-based software company. The firm needs your help to come up with a better design for one of its products. Several members of the TechSmith UX team will be on hand to present the design problem, facilitate the brainstorming, and give feedback on designs. Please RSVP for a very important reason — to ensure there’s enough pizza. The event will be from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, March 5 in the Duderstadt Center Design Lab 1.
